How to Factory Reset an Amazon Fire Tablet

Amazon Fire Tablets are incredibly popular due to their low price point and seamless integration with Amazon services like Kindle, Prime Video, and Alexa. However, because they are budget devices with limited processing power, they can become frustratingly sluggish over time. Apps might start crashing, the battery might drain unusually fast, or the touchscreen may stop responding altogether.

If you have already tried restarting the tablet and uninstalling unused apps, a factory reset is the best way to breathe new life into the device. It completely wipes the internal memory, restoring the software to the exact state it was in when you first took it out of the box.

Furthermore, if you are planning to sell the tablet, give it to a family member, or trade it in, you must perform a factory reset. Your Fire Tablet is deeply tied to your personal Amazon account; failing to wipe it could give the next owner access to your credit card for purchasing books and movies.

There are two ways to reset a Fire Tablet: through the settings menu, or by using Recovery Mode if the screen is frozen.

Before You Begin: Backup Your Data

A factory reset deletes everything stored locally on the tablet. This includes downloaded movies, games, photos, and personal documents. However, anything purchased through Amazon (like Kindle books or apps) is safely stored in the cloud and can be redownloaded later.

To ensure your settings and personal files are safe, force a manual backup to the cloud before proceeding:

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Settings (gear icon).
2. Scroll down and tap Device Options.
3. Tap Backup & Restore.
4. Ensure the “Backup & Restore” toggle is turned on, then tap Back Up Now. Wait for the process to complete.

Method 1: Resetting from the Settings Menu (Recommended)

If your tablet is turning on and you can navigate the menus, this is the safest and easiest way to wipe the device.

1. Ensure your tablet is charged to at least 30%, or plug it into a charger. The reset process can take a few minutes, and if the battery dies halfway through, it can permanently damage the software.
2. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Settings (gear icon).
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and tap Device Options.
4. Tap Reset to Factory Defaults.
5. A warning message will appear, reminding you that you are about to delete all your personal data and deregister the device from your Amazon account. Tap Reset to confirm.

The screen will go black, and the Amazon logo will appear. The tablet will take several minutes to erase its memory. Once finished, it will reboot and display the initial language selection screen.

Method 2: Resetting via Recovery Mode (For Frozen Tablets)

If your Fire Tablet is stuck on the Amazon logo, trapped in a boot loop, or if the touchscreen is completely unresponsive and you cannot access the Settings menu, you must force a reset using the physical buttons.

1. Hold down the Power button for about 20 seconds until the tablet turns completely off.
2. Once the screen is black, press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously.
3. When the Amazon logo appears on the screen, release both buttons.
4. The tablet will boot into “Recovery Mode,” displaying a stark, text-based menu (it usually looks like blue or yellow text on a black background). Note: Your touchscreen will not work here.
5. Use the Volume keys to scroll up and down the list until Wipe data/factory reset is highlighted.
6. Press the Power button once to select it.
7. Use the Volume keys to highlight Yes to confirm, and press the Power button again.

You will see some text scrolling at the bottom of the screen as the tablet deletes your data. Once it says “Data wipe complete,” the main menu will reappear. Ensure Reboot system now is highlighted, and press the Power button one final time. The tablet will restart as a fresh device.
