How to Connect an Xbox Controller to a Chromebook

Gaming on Chrome OS

Chromebooks were originally designed as simple, lightweight laptops for browsing the web and editing Google Docs. However, with the rise of cloud gaming platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming (formerly xCloud), NVIDIA GeForce Now, and Amazon Luna, a standard Chromebook can now stream and play demanding AAA console games perfectly. To get the most out of these services, or to play Android games downloaded from the Google Play Store, you need a proper gamepad.

Fortunately, Chrome OS natively supports the Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller. You do not need to download any special drivers or install third-party mapping software. The Chromebook will recognise the controller exactly as a Windows PC would.

You can connect your Xbox controller to your Chromebook using two different methods: a wired USB connection for the lowest possible latency, or a wireless Bluetooth connection for convenience.

Method 1: Connect via Bluetooth (Wireless)

Connecting your controller via Bluetooth is the most convenient method, allowing you to play from the couch without trailing wires across the room.

Note: You must have an Xbox One controller (produced after 2016), an Xbox Series X/S controller, or an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller. The original launch Xbox One controllers do not have Bluetooth built-in. If the plastic surrounding the Xbox button is part of the faceplate, it has Bluetooth. If the plastic surrounding the Xbox button is part of the top bumper section, it does not.

  1. Turn on the Controller: Press the large Xbox button in the centre of the controller until it lights up.
  2. Enter Pairing Mode: Locate the small, circular Pairing button on the top edge of the controller (next to the left bumper). Press and hold this button for three seconds until the Xbox button begins flashing rapidly. This indicates the controller is searching for a new device.
  3. Open Chromebook Settings: On your Chromebook, click the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel.
  4. Turn on Bluetooth: Ensure the Bluetooth toggle is switched on (it should be highlighted blue).
  5. Access Bluetooth Menu: Click the small arrow beneath the Bluetooth icon, or click the main Settings gear icon and navigate to Bluetooth.
  6. Pair New Device: Click on Pair new device. Your Chromebook will begin scanning for nearby signals.
  7. Select the Controller: After a few seconds, “Xbox Wireless Controller” should appear in the list of available devices. Click it.

The flashing light on the controller will turn solid white, confirming the connection is successful. You can now open your game or cloud streaming app and begin playing.

Method 2: Connect via USB Cable (Wired)

If you do not want to deal with batteries, or if you are playing a fast-paced competitive game where input latency is critical, a wired connection is always the most reliable option.

  1. Locate a compatible USB cable.
    • For an Xbox One controller, you need a Micro-USB cable.
    • For an Xbox Series X/S or Elite Series 2 controller, you need a USB-C cable.
  2. Plug the small end of the cable into the top of the Xbox controller.
  3. Plug the standard USB-A (or USB-C) end of the cable into an available port on your Chromebook.
  4. The controller will instantly vibrate and the Xbox button will light up.

Chrome OS will automatically detect the controller and configure it for use. There is no setup menu required for a wired connection.

Troubleshooting: The Controller is Connected but Not Working

If your Chromebook says the controller is connected via Bluetooth, but your game is not responding to your button presses, the issue is almost certainly a software conflict within the specific game or browser you are using.

1. Cloud Gaming Issues (Browser):
If you are playing a game through a web browser (like Xbox Cloud Gaming on Chrome), the browser may have momentarily lost focus on the controller. Try clicking anywhere inside the game window with your mouse to refocus the browser, then try moving the thumbstick again.

2. Android App Compatibility:
If you are playing a mobile game downloaded from the Google Play Store, the game itself must explicitly support gamepads. Many popular touchscreen games (like Genshin Impact on Android) simply do not recognise controller inputs. This is a limitation of the game developer, not your Chromebook or the controller.

3. Unpair and Reconnect:
If the controller refuses to work across all apps, the Bluetooth handshake may have corrupted. Go to your Chromebook’s Bluetooth settings, find the Xbox Wireless Controller, click the three dots next to it, and select Forget. Then, repeat the pairing process from Method 1.
