Securing Your Streaming Account
In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery rebranded its flagship streaming service, transitioning from “HBO Max” to simply “Max.” While the branding and the app interface changed, the underlying account security remains largely the same. Because Max accounts frequently hold sensitive credit card information and are often shared among friends and family, rotating your password periodically is a crucial step in maintaining your digital security.
If you suspect someone is using your account without permission (perhaps you noticed unfamiliar shows in your “Continue Watching” row), or if you simply cannot remember your login details, you will need to update your credentials. You cannot change your password directly from a smart TV; you must use a web browser on a computer or your smartphone.
This guide will show you how to update your password if you know your current one, and how to recover your account if you are completely locked out.
Method 1: Change Your Password (If You Know It)
If you are already logged in on a computer or your phone, updating your password is a straightforward process.
- Open a web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge) and go to max.com.
- If necessary, click Sign In in the top-right corner and enter your current credentials.
- Once you are on the main browsing screen, select your primary viewing profile.
- Hover your mouse over your Profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen. (If you are on a mobile browser, tap the menu icon).
- Click on Account from the drop-down menu.
- Look for the Password section. Click the Edit button (usually represented by a pencil icon) next to your hidden password.
- Max takes security seriously and will immediately send a One-Time Passcode (OTP) to the email address associated with your account.
- Open your email inbox in a new tab, copy the 6-digit code, and paste it into the Max website.
- Once verified, you will be prompted to enter a New password. Ensure it is strong, unique, and not used on any other streaming service.
- Crucial Step: Ensure you check the box that says “Sign out of all devices.” This is the only way to guarantee that anyone currently using your account on a TV or tablet is forcefully disconnected.
- Click Save.
Your password is now updated.
Method 2: Reset Your Password (If You Are Locked Out)
If you cannot remember your password, you will need to use the Max account recovery tool.
- Go to max.com and click the Sign In button.
- Click the link that says Forgot password?.
- Enter the Email address associated with your Max account.
- Click Submit (or “Send Email”).
- Check your email inbox for a message from Max with the subject line “Reset Your Password.” (If you do not see it within a few minutes, check your Spam or Junk folder).
- Open the email and click the Reset Password button inside. This link is usually only valid for 24 hours.
- A new webpage will open. Enter your New password.
- Check the box to “Sign out of all devices.”
- Click Save.
Troubleshooting: Billed Through a Third-Party Provider
If you attempt to change your password but the Max website redirects you to another company’s login page, it means you do not pay for Max directly. Instead, your subscription is managed by a third-party provider (such as Apple, Roku, Amazon, Hulu, or your local cable/internet provider).
In this scenario, your Max login is directly tied to the login of that provider. To change your Max password, you must actually change the password of the provider account.
- Apple: Change your Apple ID password.
- Roku: Change your Roku account password.
- Cable Provider: Log into your cable provider’s portal (e.g., Xfinity or Spectrum) and change your account password there.
If you are unsure who bills you, go to the Max Account page and look under the Subscription section. It will clearly state “Billed through [Provider Name].”
