Because Netflix accounts are frequently shared among family members, friends, and former housemates, it is easy to lose track of exactly who has access to your login credentials. If you suspect someone is using your account without your permission—perhaps because random shows are appearing in your “Continue Watching” row, or because you received an email about a new login from an unrecognised device—changing your password is the only way to secure your account.

Updating your password is also a necessary step if you are simply trying to upgrade your digital security by moving away from weak, easily guessed passwords. Netflix makes this process simple, but you cannot do it directly from your smart TV or streaming stick. You must use a web browser on a computer or a mobile device.

This guide will explain how to update your password if you already know your current one, and how to recover your account if you have been completely locked out.

Method 1: Change Your Password (If You Know It)

If you are already logged into Netflix on your computer or phone and simply want to update your security credentials, follow these steps:

1. Open a web browser and go to netflix.com. (If you are on a smartphone, you can also open the Netflix app, tap your profile picture in the top right, and select Account, which will automatically redirect you to the website).
2. If necessary, click Sign In and enter your current email and password.
3. Select your primary viewing profile to access the main home screen.
4. Hover your mouse over your Profile picture in the top-right corner of the screen and click on Account from the drop-down menu.
5. Look under the “Membership & Billing” section at the top of the page. Click the link on the right-hand side that says Change password.
6. You will be taken to a secure page with three text boxes. In the first box, enter your Current password.
7. In the second box, enter your New password. Ensure it is strong and unique.
8. In the third box, re-enter your new password to confirm it.
9. Crucial Step: Below the text boxes, there is a small checkbox labelled “Require all devices to sign in again with new password.” You must tick this box. If you do not, anyone currently watching on a smart TV or iPad will remain logged in indefinitely.
10. Click the blue Save button.

Your password is now updated, and all unauthorised users have been forcefully disconnected.

Method 2: Reset Your Password (If You Are Locked Out)

If you cannot remember your password, or if a hacker has maliciously changed it to lock you out, you must use the recovery tool.

1. Go to netflix.com/loginhelp.
2. You will be asked how you would like to reset your password. Select either Email or Text Message (SMS).
3. Enter the email address or phone number associated with your account and click the blue button.
4. If you chose Email: Check your inbox for a message from Netflix. Click the red Reset Password button inside the email. This link is only valid for 24 hours.
5. If you chose Text Message: You will receive a verification code on your phone. Enter this code into the Netflix website to proceed.
6. You will be taken to a new screen where you can type your new password twice to confirm it.
7. Again, ensure you tick the box to “Require all devices to sign in again.”
8. Click Save.

Troubleshooting: I Forgot My Email Address Too

If you have had your Netflix account for a decade and cannot remember which old email address you used to sign up, the standard recovery page will not work. Fortunately, Netflix provides a fallback method using your billing information.

1. Go back to netflix.com/loginhelp.
2. Look at the very bottom of the page for a link that says I can’t remember my email address or phone number. Click it.
3. You will be asked to enter the First name and Last name on the account, as well as the Credit or debit card number currently being used to pay for the subscription.
4. Click Find Account.

If the details match their records, Netflix will reveal the email address tied to the account and allow you to initiate a password reset.
