Restoring Your TV’s Performance
Modern Vizio Smart TVs use a platform called SmartCast. Unlike Roku or Android TV, where you physically download apps to the television’s internal storage, Vizio’s SmartCast operates more like a built-in Chromecast. The “apps” you see on the screen are essentially web-based shortcuts that stream from the cloud to your TV.
Because of this architecture, a Vizio TV handles temporary data (cache) differently than a smartphone or a standard smart TV. When your Vizio TV begins to run slowly, freezes on the SmartCast loading screen, or refuses to open certain apps, it is usually because the internal memory handling the SmartCast interface is overloaded with corrupted temporary files.
Because there are no traditional apps installed on the hard drive, there is no single “Clear Cache” button buried in the settings menu. To clear the cache on a Vizio TV, you must force the television to dump its system memory through a process called power cycling.
Method 1: The Soft Power Cycle (Using the Remote)
The easiest way to clear the active memory is to force the TV to perform a full system reboot from the settings menu. Simply pressing the power button on the remote does not work; that only puts the TV to sleep, keeping the corrupted memory active in the background.
To perform a soft power cycle:
- Turn the Vizio TV on.
- Press the Menu button on your Vizio remote.
- Navigate to System (or “Admin & Privacy” on newer models) and press OK.
- Select Reset & Admin.
- Choose the option labelled Reboot TV (or “Soft Power Cycle”).
- Confirm your choice by selecting Yes.
The television screen will go black, and the TV will restart. This forces the SmartCast platform to dump its temporary memory and reload the cloud-based apps from scratch, which often cures sluggish performance immediately.
Method 2: The Hard Power Cycle (The Unplug Method)
If the TV is completely frozen, or if the soft power cycle did not fix the problem, you need to perform a hard power cycle. This method physically drains all residual electricity from the TV’s internal capacitors, ensuring the memory is completely wiped.
- Turn the Vizio TV on.
- Unplug the power cord directly from the wall outlet (or from the back of the TV). Do not just turn off a power strip.
- While the TV is unplugged, locate the physical Power button on the TV itself. (This is usually located on the back-left side, or occasionally hidden underneath the bottom-left corner of the screen).
- Press and hold the physical Power button on the TV for 15 to 30 seconds. Because the TV is unplugged, nothing will happen on screen, but holding this button forces the capacitors to drain their remaining charge.
- Release the button.
- Leave the TV unplugged for a full two minutes.
- Plug the TV back into the wall outlet.
- Turn the TV on using the remote.
The TV will take slightly longer to boot up than usual, and the “SmartCast is Starting Up” screen will appear. Your cache is now completely cleared.
Method 3: Clear the SmartCast App Cache (Mobile Phone)
If you control your Vizio TV using the Vizio Mobile app (formerly SmartCast Mobile) on your smartphone, the app on your phone might be the source of the problem, rather than the TV itself.
If the app refuses to connect to the TV, you need to clear the app’s cache on your mobile device.
For Android Users:
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Navigate to Apps (or Apps & Notifications).
- Find and select the Vizio Mobile app from the list.
- Tap on Storage & cache.
- Tap the Clear Cache button.
- Open the Vizio app and try connecting to the TV again.
For iPhone Users:
iOS does not have a dedicated “Clear Cache” button for individual apps. To clear the cache on an iPhone, you must completely delete the app and reinstall it.
- Find the Vizio app on your home screen.
- Press and hold the app icon until the menu appears.
- Tap Remove App, then select Delete App.
- Open the App Store, search for Vizio Mobile, and download it again.
