Unblocking Your Search Results
SafeSearch is a mandatory filtering tool implemented by all major search engines to prevent explicit images, violent videos, and adult websites from appearing in standard search results. While this is an excellent feature for families and public networks, it can be overly aggressive. If you are an adult attempting to research medical conditions, anatomy, or certain artistic subjects, a strict SafeSearch filter will often censor legitimate, educational websites, making it difficult to find accurate information.
Yahoo Search, much like its competitors Google and Bing, enforces a “Moderate” SafeSearch filter on all accounts by default. This moderate setting blocks explicit images and videos but generally allows text-based links to appear.
If you want entirely unrestricted access to the web, you must manually disable this filter. The process is quick, but the settings menu is slightly hidden depending on whether you are using a computer or a mobile device.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Desktop Browser)
If you are using a desktop or laptop computer, you can disable the filter directly from the Yahoo Search results page.
- Open your web browser and go to yahoo.com.
- Perform any random search (e.g., type “test” into the search bar and press Enter) so you are looking at a page of search results.
- Look at the top-right corner of the screen, just above the search results, and click on the Settings gear icon (or the “Options” menu).
- A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Preferences (or “Settings,” depending on your region).
- On the Preferences page, locate the SafeSearch section.
- You will see a drop-down menu with three options:
- Strict: Filters explicit text, images, and videos.
- Moderate: Filters explicit images and videos (the default).
- Off: Does not filter any results.
- Click the drop-down menu and select Off.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the page and click the blue Save button. (If you do not click Save, the changes will not apply).
- A pop-up may appear asking you to agree to the new terms; click I Agree.
Your search results will reload and the filter will be removed.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Mobile Browser)
If you are searching on a smartphone using Safari, Chrome, or the default Android browser, the layout is slightly different to accommodate the smaller screen.
- Go to yahoo.com on your mobile browser and perform a search to access the results page.
- Scroll down to the very bottom of the search results page.
- Look for the small link labelled Settings or Preferences and tap it.
- Locate the SafeSearch section.
- Tap the drop-down menu and change the setting from “Moderate” to Off.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Save.
- Accept any confirmation prompts that appear on the screen.
Troubleshooting: The Setting Keeps Reverting to Moderate
If you successfully change the setting to “Off,” but it automatically changes back to “Moderate” the next day (or the next time you open your browser), you are experiencing a cookie issue.
Search engines remember your SafeSearch preferences by placing a small text file, called a cookie, into your web browser. If your browser is set to automatically delete cookies every time you close it (often due to strict privacy settings or an aggressive ad-blocker), Yahoo will forget your preference and default back to the “Moderate” setting the next time you visit.
To permanently save your preference, you must create a Yahoo account and log in.
- Go to yahoo.com and click Sign In in the top-right corner.
- Log into your account (or create a free one).
- Perform a search and follow the steps above to change your SafeSearch settings to “Off.”
Once you are logged in, Yahoo ties the SafeSearch preference to your account rather than your browser cookies. As long as you remain logged in, your searches will always be unfiltered, regardless of which device or browser you use.
Why Can’t I Turn It Off on a Public Wi-Fi Network?
If you follow the steps above, but the “Off” option is missing, greyed out, or locked, you are likely browsing on a managed network. Schools, libraries, corporate offices, and even some public cafes use network-level filtering to force all connected devices into Strict SafeSearch mode. You cannot bypass this setting on their network; you will need to disconnect from the Wi-Fi and use your cellular data instead.
