How to Turn Off Read Receipts on WhatsApp

Taking Back Your Messaging Privacy

One of WhatsApp’s most defining features is the double blue checkmark system. When you send a message, one grey tick means it left your phone, two grey ticks mean it reached the recipient’s phone, and two blue ticks mean the recipient actually opened the chat and read the message. These blue ticks are known as “read receipts.”

While read receipts can be incredibly useful when you are trying to coordinate plans and need to know if someone saw your message, they can also create a tremendous amount of social pressure. If someone sees that you have read their message but you do not reply immediately because you are busy (or simply don’t want to talk right now), they might feel ignored or offended.

If you prefer to read your messages at your own pace without the sender knowing you have seen them, you can disable read receipts entirely. However, there is a catch: if you turn off read receipts to stop others from seeing when you read their messages, you will also lose the ability to see when they read yours. It is a strict two-way street.

How to Turn Off Read Receipts

Disabling read receipts is a global setting. Once you turn it off, it applies to all your individual chats simultaneously. You cannot turn off read receipts for one specific person while leaving them on for everyone else.

  1. Open the WhatsApp application on your smartphone.
  2. Navigate to the Settings menu:
  • On an iPhone: Tap the Settings icon (the gear) in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • On Android: Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the screen, then select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  1. Tap on Privacy (look for the padlock icon).
  2. Scroll down until you find the toggle switch labelled Read Receipts.
  3. Tap the toggle to turn it Off (the switch will turn grey).

That is it. From this moment forward, when you read a new message in an individual chat, the sender will only ever see two grey ticks, never blue ones. You can now open messages and reply whenever you feel ready, without the pressure of the sender knowing you are “leaving them on read.”

The Group Chat Exception

While the steps above provide excellent privacy for one-on-one conversations, there is one major exception you must be aware of: Group Chats.

WhatsApp’s privacy system treats group chats differently. Even if you turn off your read receipts in the main settings menu, read receipts will always remain active in group chats. When you open a group chat and read a message, your name will still appear on the “Read by” list for the person who sent it.

Similarly, Voice Notes (audio messages) bypass this privacy setting. If someone sends you an audio message and you press play, the microphone icon next to the message will turn blue for the sender, confirming you listened to it, regardless of your read receipt settings.

How to Read Messages Secretly (Without Turning Off Receipts)

If you generally like having read receipts turned on, but you occasionally need to read a specific message without triggering the blue ticks, there are two workarounds:

  1. Read via Notifications: When a message arrives, do not open WhatsApp. Instead, pull down your phone’s notification shade. You can read the entire text of most messages directly from the notification banner without opening the app and triggering the read receipt.
  2. Airplane Mode Trick: If a message is very long and gets cut off in the notification banner, turn on your phone’s Airplane Mode to disconnect from the internet. Open WhatsApp and read the message. Close the app completely, then turn Airplane Mode off. Because your phone was offline when you opened the chat, WhatsApp could not send the read receipt to the server.
