How to Factory Reset a Garmin Forerunner

Resolving Glitches or Preparing for Sale

Garmin Forerunner watches are incredible pieces of fitness technology, but like any small computer constantly tracking GPS data, monitoring heart rates, and syncing with a smartphone, they can occasionally run into software issues. If your watch has started freezing during workouts, the battery is draining inexplicably fast, or the device refuses to sync with the Garmin Connect app, a factory reset is often the most effective way to solve the problem.

Furthermore, if you have recently upgraded to a newer model and plan to sell your old Forerunner or give it to a friend, performing a hard factory reset is a mandatory security step. It completely wipes your personal health metrics, saved activities, downloaded music, and Garmin Pay wallet information from the physical device.

There are two primary ways to reset a Garmin Forerunner. A “soft reset” (restarting the device) is best for minor glitches, while a “master reset” (factory reset) completely deletes all data.

Before You Reset: Sync Your Data

A master reset deletes all activities currently saved on the watch itself. However, it does not delete any data that has already been uploaded to your Garmin Connect account in the cloud.

Before proceeding with a factory reset, open the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone and ensure your watch has successfully synced its most recent workout. Once your run or cycle is visible in the smartphone app, it is safe in the cloud, and wiping the physical watch will not delete that history.

Method 1: The Soft Reset (For Frozen Screens)

If your Forerunner is completely unresponsive—perhaps frozen on the time screen or stuck mid-workout—you cannot navigate the menus to perform a factory reset. You must force the watch to reboot first. This method does not delete any of your settings or personal data.

  1. Locate the Light / Power button. On almost all Forerunner models, this is the top-left button.
  2. Press and hold the button down. Do not let go.
  3. The screen will eventually go completely blank. Continue holding the button for approximately 15 seconds.
  4. Release the button.
  5. Wait a few seconds, then press the Light button once more to turn the watch back on.

If the watch turns on and operates normally, you may not need to proceed to the factory reset.

Method 2: The Master Reset (Wiping All Data)

If the watch is still glitching after a soft reset, or if you are preparing to sell it, you must perform a master reset through the system settings menu.

Note: While the menu structure is largely the same across the Forerunner line, the exact wording might differ slightly depending on whether you have an older model (like the Forerunner 235) or a newer model (like the Forerunner 265 or 965).

  1. From the main watch face, press and hold the Up / Menu button (usually the middle-left button) until the main menu appears.
  2. Use the Down button to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list and select System (you select by pressing the top-right “Start/Stop” button).
  3. Scroll down and select Reset.
  4. You will now be presented with a few options:
  • Reset Default Settings: This resets the watch’s display and system settings back to their factory state, but it keeps your saved activities, personal records, and downloaded music. This is useful for troubleshooting without losing your current training status.
  • Delete All Activities: This keeps your settings but wipes your workout history to free up storage space.
  • Delete Data and Reset Settings: This is the full master reset. It deletes absolutely everything, including your Garmin Pay wallet and music.
  1. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings.
  2. The watch will display a final warning asking if you are sure. Scroll down and select Yes.

The screen will go blank, and the Garmin logo will appear. The reset process can take a few minutes. Once it is complete, the watch will boot up and display the initial setup screen, asking you to select your language, just as it did when you first took it out of the box.

Post-Reset Cleanup (Garmin Connect App)

If you are keeping the watch, you will now need to open the Garmin Connect app on your phone, put the watch into pairing mode, and set it up as if it were a brand new device.

If you are selling the watch, you should remove the device from your Garmin account:

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app on your phone.
  2. Tap More (or the Menu icon) in the bottom right corner.
  3. Select Garmin Devices.
  4. Tap the image of your Forerunner.
  5. Tap the three dots in the top right corner and select Remove Device.

Finally, go into your smartphone’s Bluetooth settings and tell your phone to “Forget” the Garmin watch to ensure a clean break.
