How to Change Your Password on Spotify

Whether you suspect someone has gained unauthorised access to your account, you are rotating passwords for better security, or you have simply forgotten your login details, changing your Spotify password is a crucial account maintenance task. Your Spotify account holds years of curated playlists, algorithm preferences, and potentially your payment information. Securing it should be a priority.

While the Spotify mobile app is excellent for listening to music, it is surprisingly limited when it comes to account management. You cannot change your password directly from the iPhone or Android app. The process must be completed using a web browser.

This guide will walk you through the process of resetting your password, whether you currently know your old password or are locked out entirely.

Method 1: Change Your Password (If You Know Your Current One)

If you are already logged in or know your current password but simply want to update it to something stronger, follow these steps:

1. Open a web browser (like Chrome, Safari, or Edge) on your computer, tablet, or smartphone.
2. Go to spotify.com.
3. If you are not already logged in, click Log In in the top right corner and enter your current credentials.
4. Once logged in, click on your Profile picture (or username) in the top right corner of the screen.
5. Select Account from the drop-down menu. This will open the main Account Overview page.
6. Look at the menu on the left side of the screen and click on Change password.
7. You will be presented with three text boxes. In the top box, type your Current password.
8. In the middle box, type your New password. Ensure it is strong, unique, and not used on any other website.
9. In the bottom box, type your new password again to confirm it.
10. Click the green Set new password button.

Your password is now updated. Any devices currently logged into your account will eventually be logged out, requiring you to enter the new password.

Method 2: Reset Your Password (If You Have Forgotten It)

If you are locked out of your account, you can use the password reset tool. You will need access to the email address associated with your Spotify account.

1. Go to the Spotify login page (spotify.com/login).
2. Click the link that says Forgot your password?.
3. Enter the Email address or username associated with your account.
4. Click Send.
5. Check your email inbox. You should receive a message from Spotify with the subject line “Reset your password.” (If you do not see it, check your spam or junk folder).
6. Open the email and click the green Reset password link inside.
7. A new webpage will open. Enter your New password twice to confirm it.
8. Click Send or Save.

Troubleshooting: Why Can’t I Reset My Password?

If you are struggling to change your password, you likely fall into one of two categories:

1. You Used Facebook or Apple to Sign In
Many users initially created their Spotify accounts by clicking “Continue with Facebook,” “Continue with Apple,” or “Continue with Google.” If you did this, your Spotify account does not actually have a standalone password. It relies entirely on your Facebook or Apple credentials for authentication. To change your login details, you must change your Facebook, Apple, or Google password directly on their respective websites. Alternatively, you can contact Spotify support to detach your social media account and create a standalone login.

2. You Are Not Receiving the Reset Email
If you clicked “Forgot Password” but the email never arrived, it usually means you entered the wrong email address. Think back to old email addresses you may have used when you first signed up for the service years ago. If you still cannot locate the account, you will need to contact Spotify’s customer support and provide payment details (such as the last four digits of your credit card) to prove ownership of the account.

Logging Out Everywhere

If you are changing your password because you suspect someone else is using your account, changing the password is only the first step. You should also forcefully kick all devices off the network.

Go to your main Account page on the Spotify website, scroll to the bottom of the “Account overview” section, and click Sign out everywhere. This ensures anyone currently listening to your music will instantly lose access.
