How to Secure Your Discord Account with Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Why You Need Two-Factor Authentication on Discord

Discord is a central hub for gamers, communities, and professionals, which makes it a prime target for hackers. If someone gains access to your Discord account, they can impersonate you, message your friends with malicious links, or even hijack and delete servers you manage.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) acts as a critical second layer of security. Even if a hacker discovers your password, they cannot log into your account without the unique, time-sensitive code generated by your smartphone.

Requirements Before You Start

To enable 2FA on Discord, you will need to download an authenticator app on your mobile device. Popular and trusted options include:

• Google Authenticator (Available on iOS and Android)
• Authy (Available on iOS, Android, and Desktop)
• Microsoft Authenticator (Available on iOS and Android)

Ensure you have one of these apps installed and set up on your phone before proceeding.

How to Enable Discord 2FA on Desktop or Web

Setting up 2FA is easiest on a computer, but the process is very similar on mobile.

1. Open the Discord application on your computer or log into the Discord website.
2. Click the gear icon (User Settings) located in the bottom-left corner of the screen, next to your username and avatar.
3. In the left-hand menu, ensure you are on the My Account tab.
4. Scroll down to the Password and Authentication section and click the Enable Two-Factor Auth button.
5. Discord will prompt you to enter your current password to verify your identity.
6. A window will appear displaying a QR code and a manual setup key.

Linking Your Authenticator App

Now, you must link your authenticator app to Discord.

1. Open your chosen authenticator app on your smartphone.
2. Tap the option to add a new account (usually a + icon or "Add Account").
3. Select Scan a QR code and point your phone’s camera at the QR code displayed on your computer screen. (If you cannot scan the code, use the manual setup key provided by Discord).
4. Your authenticator app will immediately generate a 6-digit code for Discord.
5. Enter this 6-digit code into the Discord window on your computer and click Activate.

Crucial Step: Download Your Backup Codes

Once 2FA is enabled, Discord will present you with a list of backup codes. Do not skip this step.

If you lose your phone, accidentally delete your authenticator app, or buy a new device without transferring your accounts, you will be permanently locked out of your Discord account. These backup codes are your only emergency access method.

1. Click the Download Backup Codes button.
2. Save the text file to a secure location, such as an encrypted folder, a password manager, or print a physical copy to keep in a safe place.
3. Never share these codes with anyone.

How to Enable SMS Backup (Optional)

For added convenience, Discord allows you to link a phone number as an SMS backup. If you lose access to your authenticator app, Discord can text you a login code.

1. After enabling 2FA, return to the My Account settings page.
2. Under the Password and Authentication section, click Enable SMS Authentication.
3. Enter your mobile phone number and follow the verification prompts.

Note: While SMS backup is convenient, it is generally considered less secure than an authenticator app due to the risk of SIM swapping attacks. Use it only if you understand the risks.
