How to Import Bookmarks into Mozilla Firefox

Switching to a new web browser can feel like moving to a new house. The software itself might be faster and more secure, but you suddenly find yourself without all your familiar furniture. If you are migrating from Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari over to Mozilla Firefox, the most tedious part of the transition is usually rebuilding your collection of saved websites.

Fortunately, Firefox includes an excellent built-in tool that allows you to seamlessly import your entire bookmark library in just a few clicks. You do not need to manually copy and paste URLs or rely on third-party extensions.

In this guide, we will show you exactly how to import your bookmarks directly from another browser, or from a saved HTML file, straight into Mozilla Firefox.

Method 1: Import Directly from Another Browser

If the browser you are moving away from (such as Chrome or Edge) is still installed on your computer, Firefox can communicate with it and pull your data automatically. This is the fastest and easiest method.

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  2. Click on the Application Menu (the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner of the window).
  3. Select Bookmarks from the dropdown list.
  4. Click on Manage Bookmarks at the very bottom of the menu. (Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Shift + O on Windows or Cmd + Shift + O on Mac).
  5. A new window called the “Library” will open. Look at the toolbar at the top of this window and click on the Import and Backup button (it has an icon of two arrows).
  6. Select Import Data from Another Browser from the dropdown menu.
  7. The Import Wizard will appear. Select the browser you want to import from (e.g., Google Chrome) and click Next.
  8. Choose what data you want to bring over. Ensure the box next to Bookmarks is checked. (You can also choose to import passwords and browsing history here).
  9. Click Next, then click Finish.

Your bookmarks will immediately appear in Firefox. If you imported them from Chrome, you will usually find them inside a newly created folder called “From Google Chrome” located on your Bookmarks Toolbar or in the Bookmarks Menu.

Method 2: Import from an HTML File

If you are moving to a completely new computer, or if your previous browser is no longer installed, the direct import method will not work. Instead, you must first export your bookmarks from your old browser as an HTML file, save it to a USB drive or cloud storage, and then import that specific file into Firefox.

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + O (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + O (Mac) to open the Library window.
  3. Click the Import and Backup button on the top toolbar.
  4. Select Import Bookmarks from HTML.
  5. A standard file browser window will open. Navigate to the location where you saved your bookmarks HTML file (e.g., your Downloads folder or a USB drive).
  6. Click on the file to select it, then click Open.

Firefox will instantly read the file and add all the saved links to your Bookmarks Menu. The original folder structure you used in your old browser will be perfectly preserved.

How to Show the Bookmarks Toolbar

After importing your bookmarks, you might notice that your Bookmarks Toolbar is completely empty or hidden. To make your favourite sites easily accessible just below the address bar:

  1. Right-click anywhere on an empty space near the top of the Firefox window (next to the tabs or the address bar).
  2. Hover over Bookmarks Toolbar in the context menu.
  3. Select Always Show.

By following these steps, you can confidently switch to Firefox and bring years of curated web history with you in a matter of seconds.
