Why Keep Your Laptop Awake?
By default, Windows 11 is designed to put your laptop into Sleep mode the moment you close the lid. This is a sensible default setting that prevents your laptop from overheating inside a bag and ensures your battery doesn’t drain unnecessarily while you are not using it.
However, there are many scenarios where you want the laptop to keep running even when the lid is shut:
- Using an External Monitor: If you use your laptop like a desktop PC, plugged into an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, you probably want to close the lid to save space on your desk without the computer shutting down.
- Downloading Large Files: If you are downloading a massive video game or rendering a complex video project overnight, you want to close the lid to turn off the screen glare, but you need the system to continue processing.
- Running a Home Server: If you use an old laptop to host files or run a local media server, it needs to stay awake 24/7 with the lid closed.
Fortunately, you can change this behavior in just a few clicks.
How to Change the "Choose What Closing the Lid Does" Setting
Interestingly, Microsoft has not yet moved this specific setting to the modern Windows 11 Settings app. You still need to use the classic Control Panel to adjust it.
- Click the Start button on your taskbar (or press the Windows key).
- Type Control Panel into the search bar and press Enter to open the app.
- In the top-right corner of the Control Panel window, ensure that the View by dropdown menu is set to Large icons or Small icons (not Category).
- Look through the list and click on Power Options.
- On the left-hand sidebar of the Power Options window, click the link that says Choose what closing the lid does.
You will now see a table of power settings. Look specifically at the row labeled When I close the lid.
You have two distinct columns to configure: On battery and Plugged in.
Configuring "On Battery" vs "Plugged In"
This is where you need to be careful to avoid accidentally draining your battery.
- Plugged In: Click the drop-down menu in this column and change it from "Sleep" to "Do nothing". This means when your laptop is connected to wall power, you can close the lid and it will continue running at full speed. This is perfect for the external monitor setup.
- On Battery: It is highly recommended that you leave this set to "Sleep". If you set this to "Do nothing," close your laptop, and put it in a backpack, the laptop will stay fully powered on. It will drain the battery completely and potentially overheat inside the enclosed space.
Once you have made your selections, click the Save changes button at the bottom of the window.
Your new settings will take effect immediately. You can now connect your laptop to your monitor, close the lid, and continue working without interruption.
