How to Factory Reset an Amazon Kindle

Preparing Your E-Reader for a New Owner

Amazon Kindle e-readers are incredibly durable devices that often last for many years. When you eventually upgrade to a newer model with a sharper screen or water resistance, your old Kindle is perfectly positioned to be sold, donated, or gifted to a family member.

However, before you hand your e-reader to anyone else, you must completely wipe the device. Because your Kindle is deeply integrated with your personal Amazon account, failing to reset it means the next owner could potentially purchase books using your stored credit card, read your private document library, or access your Goodreads account.

Performing a factory reset permanently erases all downloaded books, removes your Wi-Fi passwords, clears your reading history, and safely severs the connection between the physical device and your digital Amazon account.

How to Factory Reset Your Kindle

The reset process is built directly into the Kindle’s main settings menu. This process is identical regardless of whether you own a standard Kindle, a Kindle Paperwhite, or a Kindle Oasis.

  1. Turn on your Kindle and unlock the screen.
  2. From the Home screen, tap the top of the screen to reveal the main navigation toolbar.
  3. Tap the three vertical dots located in the top right corner (or the Settings gear icon, depending on your software version).
  4. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  5. Once inside the Settings menu, tap on Device Options.
  6. Scroll to the very bottom of the Device Options page and tap on Reset (on some older software versions, this is called Reset Device or Reset to Factory Defaults).
  7. A stark warning message will appear on the screen, informing you that you are about to remove all personal data and downloaded content.
  8. Tap Yes to confirm your decision.

The Kindle screen will flash, and the device will restart. You will see an image of a person sitting under a tree with a progress bar underneath. This process usually takes between 3 to 5 minutes. Do not press any buttons or attempt to turn the device off while the reset is occurring.

When the process is completely finished, the Kindle will restart one final time and display the standard “Choose your language” welcome screen. It is now safely wiped and ready for a new owner.

What Happens to My Purchased Books?

Many users hesitate to reset their Kindle because they fear losing the books they have paid for. This fear is entirely unfounded.

When you buy an eBook from Amazon, the book is not tied to the physical hardware of your specific Kindle. The book is tied to your central Amazon Account, which is stored securely in the cloud.

When you perform a factory reset, you are deleting the downloaded copy of the book from the physical device’s storage drive. You are not deleting the book from your account. If you buy a brand-new Kindle tomorrow and log in with your email address and password, your entire library of purchased books will instantly appear in the “All” or “Cloud” tab, ready to be downloaded again.

Troubleshooting: The Screen is Frozen

If you cannot perform a factory reset because the Kindle’s E-Ink screen is completely frozen and unresponsive to your touch, you must force a hard reboot before attempting the wipe.

  1. Press and hold the physical power button on the bottom of the Kindle.
  2. Do not let go. Keep holding the button down for a full 40 seconds. Time it if necessary.
  3. After 40 seconds, release the button.
  4. The screen should flash white, and the Kindle will reboot.

Once the device has successfully restarted and the touchscreen is responding again, you can navigate back to the Settings menu and perform the software reset as described above.
