We all know the familiar sensation of a phone vibrating in our pocket. However, when your iPhone is set to silent mode, every single notification—whether it is a spam email, a group chat message, or an urgent phone call from a family member—feels exactly the same.
To solve this, Apple allows you to create completely custom vibration patterns and assign them to specific contacts. By doing this, you can immediately know if your partner is calling or if your boss just sent a text message, all without ever taking your iPhone out of your pocket.
In this guide, we will show you how to tap out a custom vibration pattern on your screen and assign it to your most important contacts.
How to Create a Custom Vibration Pattern
Creating a custom vibration is surprisingly fun. You literally tap your finger on the screen to “record” a rhythm, exactly like playing a drum.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
- Under the “Sounds and Haptic Patterns” section, tap on Ringtone (or Text Tone, depending on what you want to change).
- Scroll to the very top of the list and tap on Haptics.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Haptics menu and tap Create New Vibration.
You will now see a large, empty grey area on your screen. When you are ready:
- Tap your finger on the screen to create a vibration pulse.
- Press and hold your finger down to create a long, continuous vibration.
- Lift your finger to create a pause.
For example, you could tap out three quick beats, pause, and then hold for a long beat. When you are finished recording your rhythm, tap Stop in the bottom-right corner. Tap Play in the bottom-left to feel a preview of what you just recorded.
If you are happy with the pattern, tap Save in the top-right corner and give it a memorable name (such as “Heartbeat” or “SOS Pattern”).
How to Assign a Custom Vibration to a Specific Contact
Now that you have created your unique haptic pattern, you need to assign it to a specific person in your address book so that only their calls or texts trigger it.
- Open the Contacts app (or the Phone app and tap the Contacts tab).
- Find and select the person you want to assign the vibration to.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner of their contact card.
- Scroll down and tap on Ringtone.
- At the top of the Ringtone menu, tap on Haptics.
- Look under the “Custom” section and select the unique vibration pattern you created earlier.
- Tap Back, then tap Done twice to save all your changes.
You can repeat this process for Text Tones as well. By setting up distinct vibration patterns for your VIP contacts, you can maintain your focus during meetings and dinners, knowing exactly who is trying to reach you without needing to check your screen.
