Modern televisions are no longer just display screens; they are fully functional computers. Whether you own a Sony Bravia, a TCL smart TV, or a Google Chromecast, your device relies on an operating system—typically Android TV or its newer successor, Google TV. Just like a smartphone, these operating systems constantly download and store temporary background data to help apps load faster.
This temporary data is called cache. While caching is designed to improve performance, smart TVs generally have very limited internal storage and low amounts of system RAM compared to mobile phones. Over time, bloated cache files can cause apps like Netflix or YouTube to buffer endlessly, crash unexpectedly, or make the entire home screen interface feel incredibly sluggish. Clearing the app cache is the single most effective troubleshooting step you can take to restore your TV’s performance.
The Difference Between Android TV and Google TV
Before you begin, it is helpful to know which interface your television is running, as the settings menus differ slightly.
- Android TV: The older, traditional interface. It features a straightforward row-based layout where you navigate left and right through your installed apps.
- Google TV: The newer, more modern interface found on recent Sony TVs, TCL models, and the Chromecast with Google TV. It focuses heavily on content recommendations, showing you movies and shows directly on the home screen before you even open an app.
Fortunately, regardless of which interface you have, the underlying operating system is the same, and you can clear the cache for individual apps using your remote control.
How to Clear the Cache on Google TV
If you have a newer smart TV or a Chromecast with the Google TV interface, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Google TV home screen.
- Use your remote to scroll all the way to the right and select the Profile icon (or Gear icon) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Scroll down and select Apps.
- Select See all apps to view a complete list of everything installed on your television.
- Scroll through the list and select the app that is causing problems (for example, Netflix or Prime Video).
- In the app’s settings menu, scroll down and select Clear cache.
- Select OK to confirm your decision.
Note: Do not accidentally click “Clear data”. Clearing data will completely wipe your account information and force you to log back into the app. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files.
How to Clear the Cache on Android TV
If you are using an older smart TV or an Nvidia Shield running the traditional Android TV interface, the process is very similar:
- Navigate to the Android TV home screen.
- Use your remote to select the Gear icon (Settings) located in the top-right corner of the screen.
- Scroll down and select Apps.
- Select See all apps.
- Locate and select the problematic app from the list.
- Scroll down the menu and select Clear cache.
- Confirm your choice by selecting OK.
How to Clear the Cache for All Apps at Once
Unlike smartphones, neither Android TV nor Google TV offers a native “Clear All Cache” button in the settings menu. If your entire television is running slowly and you do not want to clear the cache for 20 different apps one by one, you have two options.
Option 1: Perform a Hard Restart
Putting your TV to sleep using the power button on the remote does not clear the system memory. To perform a hard restart, you must completely cut the power.
- Turn off the TV using your remote.
- Unplug the television’s power cable directly from the wall outlet.
- Wait for a full 60 seconds.
- Plug the TV back in and turn it on. This will force the operating system to perform a fresh boot and dump unnecessary system cache.
Option 2: Use a Third-Party Storage Manager
If you want a more elegant software solution, you can open the Google Play Store on your TV and download a free app called Background Apps and Process List. This utility allows you to see exactly which apps are running in the background and provides a shortcut to quickly force-close them and clear their cache, saving you from navigating through the main settings menu repeatedly.
