How to Block a Website on an iPhone Using Screen Time

Whether you are a parent trying to protect your children from adult content or simply a professional attempting to block distracting social media websites during work hours, you might be surprised to learn that the iPhone’s Safari browser does not have a built-in “block website” button. Apple intentionally designed iOS so that web filtering happens at the system level, rather than within the browser itself.

To block a website on an iPhone, you must use Apple’s native Screen Time feature. This is actually a significant advantage: because the block is applied at the operating system level, it will prevent access to the website in Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and even within in-app browsers (like clicking a link inside a text message). Here is a complete guide on how to configure Screen Time to effectively block websites.

Understanding Screen Time Web Filtering

Screen Time is Apple’s comprehensive tool for monitoring and restricting device usage. Within its Content & Privacy Restrictions menu, you have three distinct options for web filtering:

  • Unrestricted Access: The default setting. No websites are blocked.
  • Limit Adult Websites: Apple automatically blocks known adult and explicit websites. It also allows you to manually add specific websites (like Facebook or YouTube) to an “Always Block” list.
  • Allowed Websites Only: The strictest setting. It blocks the entire internet, except for a specific whitelist of websites you manually approve. This is ideal for very young children.

For most users looking to block specific distracting websites, the “Limit Adult Websites” option is the correct choice.

How to Block Specific Websites on Your iPhone

If you want to block a specific URL (like www.reddit.com) from loading on your device, follow these exact steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Screen Time (indicated by a purple hourglass icon).
  3. Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. Toggle the Content & Privacy Restrictions switch at the top of the screen to the ON position (it will turn green).
  5. Tap on Content Restrictions.
  6. Scroll down to the Web Content section and tap on Web Content.
  7. Select the Limit Adult Websites option. You will notice two new sections appear below: “Always Allow” and “Never Allow”.
  8. Under the Never Allow section, tap Add Website.
  9. Type in the full URL of the website you want to block (for example, https://www.tiktok.com) and tap Done on your keyboard.
  10. Repeat this process for any other websites you wish to block.

Once added, if you or anyone else attempts to navigate to that URL in any browser on the iPhone, the page will refuse to load, displaying a message that the site is restricted.

How to Prevent the Block from Being Bypassed

If you are setting this up for a child, they could easily navigate to the Settings app and simply turn the restriction off. To prevent this, you must secure your Screen Time settings with a dedicated passcode.

  1. Navigate back to the main Screen Time menu.
  2. Scroll down and tap Lock Screen Time Settings (or Use Screen Time Passcode on older iOS versions).
  3. Enter a 4-digit passcode. Crucially, do not use the same passcode that unlocks the iPhone.
  4. Re-enter the passcode to confirm.
  5. You will be prompted to enter your Apple ID and password. This is a highly recommended recovery method in case you forget the 4-digit passcode in the future.

Now, whenever someone attempts to change the web filtering rules or turn off Content Restrictions, they will be blocked by the Screen Time passcode prompt.

How to Block the Entire Internet (Whitelist Mode)

If you are setting up an iPad or iPhone for a young toddler and only want them to access three or four specific educational websites, the “Allowed Websites Only” mode is the safest approach.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content.
  2. Select Allowed Websites Only.
  3. Apple will populate the list with a few default kid-friendly sites (like Disney and PBS Kids). You can swipe left on any of these to delete them.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the list and tap Add Website.
  5. Enter the Title and the URL of the specific website you want to allow.

By leveraging Screen Time, you gain total control over what can and cannot be accessed on the device, ensuring a safer and more productive digital environment.
