How to help your child overcome technology addiction?

Many busy parents easily hand their child a gadget to keep the child occupied. Although gadgets can help your child learn, too much use of it can make them less active, and may even lead to technology addiction. Smartphones, tablets and personal computers have become a necessity in modern times. These gadgets can affect the mental health of young people. Overuse of technology may even affect your child’s behavior.

1. Make an agreement with your child.

Limit your child’s time for using gadgets. Take time to sit down with your child and make guidelines for using technology at home. It is better to write these guidelines on a chart or paper, so your child can always see it.

2. Establish gadget-free zones in your home.

Establish gadget free spaces in your home. For example: Avoid using gadgets during meals, don’t allow children to use gadgets during their bedtime. This applies not only to children but also for parents. Children tend to follow their parents. If you do not follow rules, they will not follow either.

3. Fun indoor games can be a good alternative.

Encourage kids to rediscover fun indoor games that do not involve the use of technology. Example: Board games, card games, and puzzles that aid brain development. These games help your kids have fun and develop their knowledge at the same time.

4. Allow children to earn their chance to use gadgets.

Allow children to use gadgets as rewards for being good children. They will be able to eat properly, do their homework, sleep on time, and listen to parents.

5. Choose gadgets and apps carefully.

Allow children to play games and watch programs that can help them learn and get entertained as well. There is a big difference between watching science or history videos and song videos. There are lots of apps and games that can help your children learn something in a fun way. Help your children find apps and games that can help them in the long run.

6. Take them outside and play with them.

Get outside and play with your kids. Allow them to play with their friends. Teach them fun outdoor games and encourage them to stay active.

Collaborate with your child in managing the use of technology at home. We grew up in a different time where the use of technology was much less than it is today. So take your time to educate your kids for the future they are going to live, not the one we grew up in.
