How to Use Virtual Desktops in Windows 11 for Better Organisation

If you regularly work with multiple applications open at once, your screen can quickly become cluttered. Microsoft Windows 11 includes a fantastic feature called Virtual Desktops, which allows you to create separate workspaces for different tasks. By using virtual desktops, you can seamlessly separate your work applications from your personal browsing, helping you stay focused and organised.

How to Create a New Virtual Desktop

Creating a new virtual desktop in Windows 11 is incredibly straightforward:

  1. Hover your mouse over the Task view icon on your taskbar (it looks like two overlapping squares). Alternatively, you can press the Windows key + Tab on your keyboard.
  2. Click on the New desktop button that appears at the bottom of the screen.
  3. A new desktop (e.g., Desktop 2) will be created immediately. Click on it to switch to your fresh workspace.

Managing and Customising Your Desktops

Once you have multiple desktops set up, you can easily customise them to better suit your workflow. Here are a few tips to optimise your virtual workspace experience:

  • Rename your desktops: Open Task view, right-click on a desktop’s thumbnail, and select Rename. You can name them “Work”, “Gaming”, or “Research” for better clarity.
  • Change backgrounds: To make it visually obvious which desktop you are on, right-click a desktop thumbnail in Task view and select Choose background. This allows you to set a unique wallpaper for each workspace.
  • Move windows between desktops: Open Task view, right-click an open application window, hover over Move to, and select your desired desktop.

Utilising Windows 11 virtual desktops is one of the best ways to keep your digital workspace tidy and improve your overall productivity.
