If you receive a high volume of emails every day, keeping your Gmail inbox organised can be a daunting task. Fortunately, Gmail provides powerful built-in tools to help you automatically filter and label incoming messages. This allows you to categorise emails, prioritise important senders, and keep your primary inbox clutter-free.
How to Create a Filter in Gmail
Setting up a filter is the first step towards automating your inbox. Follow these straightforward steps to create your first Gmail filter:
- Open Gmail on your desktop browser.
- In the search box at the top, click the Show search options icon (the toggle switches on the right).
- Enter your filter criteria. For example, you can type a specific email address in the From field, or specific words in the Has the words field.
- At the bottom of the search window, click Create filter.
How to Apply Labels Automatically
Once you have defined your filter criteria, the next step is to choose what happens to the emails that match those rules. To organise them effectively, you should apply a label.
- In the filter action menu that appears, tick the box next to Apply the label.
- Click on the Choose label dropdown menu. You can select an existing label or create a new one by clicking New label.
- If you want these emails to skip your primary inbox entirely, also tick the box next to Skip the Inbox (Archive it).
- Finally, click Create filter.
By taking a few minutes to set up these automatic filters and labels, you can significantly optimise your daily email workflow and ensure you never miss an important message again.
