Navigating through a lengthy document can be challenging. Fortunately, Google Docs includes a built-in feature to create an automatic table of contents, allowing readers to jump directly to specific sections. This is particularly useful for reports, essays, and long-form guides.
Preparing Your Document with Headings
Before you can insert a table of contents, you must organise your document using heading styles. Google Docs generates the table of contents based on these headings.
- Highlight the text you want to use as a heading (e.g., a chapter title).
- In the toolbar at the top, click on the Normal text dropdown menu.
- Select Heading 1, Heading 2, or Heading 3 depending on the section’s hierarchy.
- Repeat this process for all the major sections in your document.
How to Insert the Table of Contents
Once your headings are correctly formatted, inserting the table of contents is incredibly straightforward:
- Place your cursor where you want the table of contents to appear (usually at the very beginning of the document).
- Click on Insert in the top menu bar.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the dropdown and hover over Table of contents.
- Choose your preferred layout: you can select a plain text format with page numbers, or a format with clickable blue links (ideal for digital viewing).
If you add or remove headings later, simply click anywhere inside your table of contents and click the Update icon (a circular arrow) that appears in the top-left corner of the box. This ensures your table of contents is always accurate and up to date.
