How to Disable the Built-In PDF Viewer in Google Chrome

The Viewer Override Vector

By default, Google Chrome intercepts any PDF file you attempt to download and forces it to open within its own built-in PDF viewer tab. While this is convenient for quickly reading a restaurant menu, Chrome’s viewer lacks advanced features like digital signature support, complex form filling, and high-resolution print scaling. If you rely on a dedicated professional application like Adobe Acrobat or Foxit Reader, Chrome’s aggressive interception creates a highly frustrating extra step, forcing you to manually save the file from the viewer before you can edit it.

How to Disable the Built-In PDF Viewer

You can instruct Chrome to stop intercepting these files entirely, forcing the browser to instantly download the raw PDF file directly to your hard drive.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Privacy and security.
5. Click on Site settings.
6. Scroll down to the absolute bottom of the main pane and click on Additional content settings to expand the menu.
7. Click on PDF documents.
8. Change the default behaviour by selecting the radio button next to Download PDFs.

Chrome will immediately relinquish control of the file format. The next time you click a PDF link, the browser will silently download the file to your designated downloads folder, allowing your dedicated desktop software to handle the document.
