Reading a long-form article or recipe on the modern internet is often a miserable experience. The text is constantly interrupted by auto-playing video advertisements, massive newsletter sign-up pop-ups, flashing sidebars, and confusing navigation menus.
If you want to strip away all the digital noise and focus entirely on the actual text, you don’t necessarily need to install a third-party ad blocker. Google Chrome includes a hidden, built-in feature called Reading Mode that instantly reformats any chaotic webpage into a clean, distraction-free digital book.
How to Access Reading Mode in Chrome
Unlike other browsers that place a prominent “Reader” button directly in the URL bar, Google Chrome hides its Reading Mode inside the side panel.
- Open Google Chrome and navigate to a cluttered article or blog post that you want to read.
- Look in the top right corner of the Chrome window, just to the right of the URL bar, and click the Side panel icon (it looks like a square with a darkened right third).
- A panel will slide out on the right side of your screen. At the top of this panel, click the drop-down menu (which usually defaults to “Bookmarks” or “Reading list”).
- Select Reading mode from the list.
The side panel will instantly populate with the text of the article you are currently viewing. It aggressively strips out every single advertisement, video, sidebar menu, and comment section, leaving you with nothing but the headline and the core text.
Customizing the Reading Experience
The default Reading Mode view is excellent, but its true power lies in its accessibility customization. Once you are in Reading Mode, look at the small toolbar at the top of the side panel. You can completely alter the text to suit your visual needs.
- Change the Font: Click the font drop-down (usually defaulting to standard sans-serif) to change the typeface. You can select “Lexend Deca,” a font specifically designed by Google to reduce visual stress and improve reading speed for users with dyslexia.
- Increase Text Size: Click the “A” icons to easily make the text larger or smaller without needing to zoom the entire browser window.
- Adjust the Theme (Dark Mode): Click the paint palette icon to change the background color. If you are reading at night, you can switch the background from harsh white to a soothing dark grey, or a high-contrast yellow-on-black theme.
- Letter and Line Spacing: Click the spacing icons to increase the distance between letters and sentences, making dense blocks of text much easier to track with your eyes.
Resizing the Reading Window
By default, the Reading Mode panel takes up about one-third of the right side of your screen, while the original, chaotic webpage remains visible on the left. This can still be distracting.
To create a truly immersive reading environment, hover your mouse over the vertical dividing line between the main webpage and the Reading Mode side panel. Your cursor will turn into a double-sided arrow. Click and drag the line all the way to the left side of your screen. This will expand the clean, ad-free Reading Mode text to fill your entire browser window.
