Browser extensions are tiny pieces of software that you install directly into Google Chrome to add new features, such as ad blockers, grammar checkers, or password managers. Just like the apps on your smartphone, these extensions require regular updates. Developers constantly release updates to patch critical security vulnerabilities, fix bugs, or add new functionality.
By default, Google Chrome attempts to update all your extensions automatically in the background. However, Chrome only checks for updates on a sporadic schedule. If you know a critical security patch was just released for your password manager, or if a specific extension is suddenly glitching, you should not wait for Chrome to figure it out. You can force the browser to update every single extension immediately.
How to Force an Extension Update
To manually trigger an update, you must access a hidden “Developer” toggle within the browser settings.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three vertical dots (the main menu icon) in the top-right corner of the window.
- Hover your mouse over Extensions.
- In the slide-out menu, click on Manage Extensions.
You are now on the main dashboard that displays large tiles for every extension currently installed on your browser.
- Look at the very top-right corner of this screen. You will see a toggle switch labelled Developer mode.
- Click the toggle to turn it ON.
Activating Developer mode does not harm your browser or change how you use the internet. It simply reveals a few advanced administrative buttons at the top of the screen that Google normally hides from regular users to prevent confusion.
- Directly below the blue search bar at the top of the screen, three new buttons will appear: “Load unpacked,” “Pack extension,” and “Update.”
- Click the Update button.
Chrome will instantly connect to the Google Web Store, check the version numbers of every single extension you have installed, and aggressively download and apply any available patches in the background. A small “Extensions updated” notification will pop up briefly at the bottom left of the screen when the process is finished.
Once the update is complete, you can safely click the Developer mode toggle back to the OFF position to re-hide the advanced buttons and keep your interface clean.
