The Problem with Incognito Mode on Mobile
Incognito mode in Google Chrome is a fantastic tool for keeping your browsing history clean, logging into multiple accounts simultaneously, or searching for private information. However, on mobile devices, it has a significant flaw: if you switch to another app and hand your phone to a friend, they can simply open Chrome and immediately see your private tabs.
To solve this, Google introduced a privacy feature that allows you to lock your Incognito tabs behind your device’s biometric security. When enabled, anyone trying to view your Incognito tabs will be prompted to use Face ID (on iOS) or fingerprint/face unlock (on Android) before the tabs become visible.
How to Enable Biometric Lock for Incognito Tabs on iOS
If you are using an iPhone or iPad, you can lock your tabs using Face ID or Touch ID.
- Open the Google Chrome app on your iOS device.
- Tap the three-dot menu icon located in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Scroll across the top row of icons and tap on Settings (the gear icon).
- Navigate to the Privacy and Security section.
- Look for the setting labeled Lock Incognito tabs when you close Chrome.
- Toggle the switch to the On position.
- Your iPhone will prompt you to authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID to confirm the change.
Once enabled, the next time you leave the Chrome app and return, your normal tabs will be visible, but your Incognito tabs will be blurred out until you authenticate.

The process is nearly identical for Android smartphones and tablets.
- Open the Google Chrome app on your Android device.

What Happens When the Feature is Active?
It is important to understand exactly how this feature behaves so you are not caught off guard.
- Leaving the app: The lock engages the moment you leave the Chrome application. If you switch to your email app for two seconds and return to Chrome, you will still need to unlock the tabs.
- Normal tabs remain visible: This feature only locks the Incognito section of the browser. Your standard browsing tabs remain completely accessible to anyone holding the phone.
- Closing tabs without unlocking: If someone finds your locked tabs, they cannot see what they are, but they can choose to close all Incognito tabs from the lock screen without needing your biometric authentication. This ensures they can still use the browser normally.
