Many Android smartphones feature a setting called “Smart Network Switch” (or “Wi-Fi Assist”). When enabled, your phone constantly monitors the strength and speed of your current Wi-Fi connection. If you walk to the edge of your house and the Wi-Fi signal drops, or if your home router temporarily loses internet access, the phone will automatically disconnect from the Wi-Fi and forcefully switch over to your cellular mobile data connection.
While this ensures uninterrupted internet access during a Netflix binge, it can be a financial disaster. If your phone silently switches to cellular data while you are downloading a massive 4GB operating system update or backing up your photo library, it will effortlessly blow right past your monthly data cap, resulting in severe throttling or expensive overage fees.
You can configure your Android device to strictly remain on the Wi-Fi network you selected, even if the connection is slow or temporarily drops.
How to Stop Automatic Switching to Mobile Data
You must disable the intelligent network switching feature within your Wi-Fi settings.
On Samsung Galaxy Devices
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Connections, then tap on Wi-Fi.
- Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Intelligent Wi-Fi (or Advanced).
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Switch to mobile data.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
On Google Pixel / Standard Android
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Network & internet, then tap on Internet (or Wi-Fi).
- Tap on Network preferences (or the gear icon).
- Look for a toggle labeled Switch to mobile data automatically or Adaptive connectivity.
- Turn the toggle to the Off position.
Your phone is now “dumb” in the best way possible. If your Wi-Fi connection becomes unstable, your phone will patiently wait for the router to recover instead of silently burning through your expensive cellular data plan.
