Microsoft Edge features a built-in spell checker designed to help you catch typos while filling out web forms, writing emails, or leaving comments on social media. By default, the browser will automatically underline any word it does not recognize with a jagged red line.
While this is generally a helpful feature, it can become incredibly annoying if you frequently type in multiple languages, use industry-specific technical jargon, or write code snippets directly in the browser. In these scenarios, Edge will incorrectly flag dozens of perfectly valid words, cluttering your screen with aggressive red squiggles that make the text difficult to read.
If you prefer a clean typing experience without constant visual interruptions, you can turn off the browser-level spell checker entirely.
How to Disable the Edge Spell Checker
You can manage the spell check settings within the Languages menu of the browser.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner of the window.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Languages.
- Scroll down the right pane until you find the section labeled “Check spelling.”
- You will see a toggle switch labeled Enable spellcheck.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
The change takes effect immediately. Any existing red squiggly lines in your active text boxes will disappear, and Edge will permanently stop analyzing your keystrokes for typographical errors.
