How to Transfer Ownership of a Single Google Calendar Event

When you create an event in Google Calendar, you are automatically designated as the “owner.” As the owner, you control the event details, guest list, and permissions. If you organize a meeting but later need someone else to take over the responsibility—perhaps because you are leaving the project or going on vacation—you can transfer ownership of that specific event without having to delete and recreate it.

Transferring ownership ensures the meeting link, guest responses, and calendar history remain intact.

How to Transfer a Google Calendar Event

You can only transfer ownership of an event using the desktop web version of Google Calendar. This feature is not currently available in the mobile app.

  1. Open Google Calendar in your web browser and click on the event you want to transfer.
  2. In the pop-up window that appears, click the Options menu (the three vertical dots) at the top.
  3. Select Change owner from the drop-down menu.
  4. A new dialog box will appear. Type the name or email address of the person you want to transfer the event to.
  5. Add a personalized message (optional) to explain why you are transferring the event.
  6. Click Change owner.

What Happens Next?

The person you designated will receive an email notification containing a link. The transfer is not complete until they accept it.

Until they click the link and accept ownership, you remain the owner of the event and retain full control over it. Once they accept, they become the sole owner and can modify the event details, change the guest list, or cancel the meeting entirely. You will simply become a standard guest on the invitation.

Note: You can only transfer ownership to someone who uses Google Calendar. You cannot transfer an event to a user on a different calendar platform, such as Outlook or Apple Calendar.
