If your Amazon Fire TV Stick is constantly buffering during Netflix movies, struggling to load the home screen, or displaying a “Critically Low Storage” error, it is time to perform some basic hardware maintenance. The Fire Stick is a fantastic streaming device, but it contains very limited internal storage (typically only 8GB, with half of that already consumed by the operating system).
As you stream content, apps silently download and store temporary files (like video thumbnails and interface scripts) so they can load faster next time. This is called the cache. Over months of heavy use, this cache swells in size and consumes all your remaining free space, causing the entire device to slow to a crawl.
Clearing the cache is completely safe. It will not delete your apps, and it will not log you out of your streaming accounts. It simply deletes the temporary junk files so the Fire Stick has room to breathe.
How to Clear the Cache for Individual Apps
Unlike some Android smartphones that offer a convenient “Optimise All” button, Amazon’s Fire OS requires you to clear the cache for each app individually. You should start with the apps you use the most (such as YouTube, Prime Video, or Netflix) and any apps that have been crashing recently.
- Turn on your TV and navigate to your Fire TV Home screen.
- Use the directional ring on your remote to scroll right and select the Settings icon (the small gear shape on the right side of the screen).
- Scroll down and select the tile labelled Applications.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select Manage Installed Applications. (Note: You will also see how much internal storage space you currently have available on this screen).
- You will now see a vertical list of every app installed on your Fire Stick. Scroll down and select the specific app you want to clean (e.g., Netflix).
- A new menu will appear on the right side of the screen. Scroll down and click Clear cache.
Warning: Be very careful not to click “Clear data”, which is located directly above the Clear cache button. If you accidentally clear the data, it will delete your account login information, forcing you to type your password into the app all over again.
Once you press “Clear cache”, the cache size listed on the right side of the screen will drop to 0 Bytes. You can now press the Back button on your remote to return to the app list and repeat the process for your other heavy-use apps.
When to Restart the Fire Stick
If you have cleared the cache for all your major apps but the device is still acting sluggish, the operating system itself might be struggling with a memory leak in the background.
After clearing the app caches, you should reboot the device to flush the system memory (RAM). The easiest way to do this is to hold down the Select button (the large circle in the middle) and the Play/Pause button simultaneously for five seconds. Your TV screen will go black, and the Fire Stick will reboot fresh, usually with significantly improved performance.
