How to Restore Deleted Contacts in Google Contacts

Recovering Lost Phone Numbers and Addresses

Accidentally deleting an important contact from your Android phone can cause immediate panic, especially if it was a client’s phone number or a family member’s new address. Fortunately, if your Android phone is synced with your Google account (which the vast majority are by default), that contact is not permanently gone right away.

Google Contacts acts as the central address book for the entire Google ecosystem, syncing seamlessly across Android, Gmail, and Google Workspace. When you delete a contact on your phone, Google moves it to a hidden “Bin” (or Trash) folder in the cloud, where it sits safely for 30 days before being permanently erased.

Here is exactly how to recover deleted contacts, either using your Android phone or a desktop web browser, before that 30-day window expires.

Method 1: Restore Contacts on an Android Phone

If you prefer to recover the contact directly on your smartphone, you will need to use the official Google Contacts app. (Note: If you have a Samsung Galaxy, your phone might default to the Samsung Contacts app. You must use the Google Contacts app for this method to work. You can download it for free from the Google Play Store if it is not installed).

  1. Open the Google Contacts app on your Android phone.
  2. Look at the bottom navigation bar and tap on Organise (or “Fix & Manage” depending on your app version).
  3. Under the “Manage contacts” section, tap on Bin (or Trash).
  4. You will now see a list of every contact deleted within the last 30 days. Scroll through the list to find the person you are looking for.
  5. Tap and hold on the contact you want to restore to select it. (You can tap multiple contacts if you need to recover more than one).
  6. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
  7. Select Recover.

The contact will immediately disappear from the Bin and reappear in your main contact list. Within a few seconds, it will automatically sync back to your phone’s dialer app.

Method 2: Restore Contacts Using a Web Browser (Desktop)

If you do not have your phone nearby, or if you find it easier to manage hundreds of contacts on a large screen, the desktop web interface is incredibly efficient.

  1. Open a web browser (such as Chrome, Edge, or Safari) on your computer.
  2. Go to contacts.google.com and log in with the exact same Google account you use on your Android phone.
  3. Look at the left-hand navigation sidebar. Scroll down and click on Bin (or Trash).
  4. Locate the deleted contact in the list.
  5. Hover your mouse cursor over the contact. A small checkbox will appear on the left side of their name; click the checkbox to select them.
  6. Look at the top of the screen and click the blue Recover button.

The web interface also offers a powerful “Undo Changes” feature if you accidentally deleted dozens of contacts at once and cannot find them all in the Bin.

How to “Undo Changes” (The Nuclear Option)

If your address book has been completely corrupted—perhaps by a rogue third-party app or a syncing error that wiped out hundreds of entries—you can roll your entire Google Contacts database back in time.

  1. Go to contacts.google.com on a desktop browser.
  2. Click the Settings icon (the gear) in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select Undo changes from the drop-down menu.
  4. A pop-up window will ask how far back you want to travel in time. You can choose 10 mins ago, 1 hr ago, Yesterday, 1 week ago, or a Custom timeframe (up to 30 days maximum).
  5. Select your desired time and click Undo.

Warning: The “Undo Changes” feature is absolute. It will restore the deleted contacts, but it will also permanently erase any brand-new contacts you added after the time period you selected. Use this feature carefully.
