The Full-Screen Interruption
There are few things more frustrating than being in the middle of a tense, competitive multiplayer game, only to have your screen suddenly flash black and minimize to the desktop. In Windows 11, this is rarely a bug with the game itself. Instead, it is usually caused by background applications aggressively demanding focus, or Windows 11’s own notification system breaking through your full-screen application. If an update finishes downloading, a calendar event triggers, or an overzealous chat application pops a notification, Windows will forcefully prioritize that alert, ripping you out of your game and dropping you onto the desktop.
Configuring Focus Assist for Gaming
To ensure uninterrupted gameplay and stop Windows 11 from automatically minimizing your full-screen games to show notifications, you must properly configure the “Focus” (formerly Focus Assist) settings.
Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings application. In the System tab on the left, click on Focus. While you can manually start a focus session here, you want to automate this for gaming. Go back one screen to System, and click on Notifications. Scroll down and ensure the master toggle for Notifications is on, but then look for the option labeled Turn on Do not disturb automatically and click it to expand the menu. Here, you must check the box next to When playing a game. Additionally, you should check the box for When using an app in full screen mode. With these settings active, Windows will intelligently suppress all background notifications, update alerts, and app pop-ups while you are gaming, completely preventing them from stealing focus and minimizing your window.
