Windows Update is designed to keep your computer running smoothly by automatically downloading the latest software. However, it also tries to automatically update your hardware drivers. If you have carefully installed a highly optimized, specific graphics card driver for a specific video game, Windows Update will frequently detect it, decide it knows better, and silently “update” your GPU to an older, broken driver from the Microsoft catalog.
This forced downgrade can instantly ruin your gaming performance or cause your screen to flicker. You cannot simply turn off Windows Update entirely, as that leaves you vulnerable to security threats. Instead, you must safely bypass the driver update protocol while leaving standard security updates enabled.
How to Safely Bypass Windows 11 Automatic Driver Updates
You must use the legacy Advanced System Settings menu to disable the hardware installation protocol.
- Click the Start button, type advanced system settings, and press Enter to open the System Properties window.
- At the top of the small window, click the Hardware tab.
- Click the button labeled Device Installation Settings.
- A new dialog box will appear asking, “Do you want to automatically download manufacturers’ apps and custom icons available for your devices?”
- By default, it is set to “Yes (recommended).” Click the radio button for No (your device might not work as expected).
- Click Save Changes.
Windows 11 will instantly sever the connection between Windows Update and your device drivers. From now on, when you install a custom Nvidia or AMD graphics driver, Windows will respect your choice and leave it alone. The operating system will continue to download critical security patches and antivirus definitions normally in the background.
