If you purchase a budget-friendly laptop for school or light office work, it often comes pre-installed with “Windows 11 in S Mode.” S Mode is an aggressive security lockdown. If you try to download and install Google Chrome, Zoom, or a third-party antivirus, Windows will instantly block the installation and throw an error stating you can only install verified apps from the Microsoft Store.
While S Mode is excellent for keeping a child’s computer safe from viruses, it makes the laptop practically useless for professional work or college courses that require specialized software. Fortunately, you can safely bypass this artificial software restriction by permanently upgrading your operating system to standard Windows 11 Home.
How to Safely Bypass Windows 11 S Mode
You must use a specific, hidden app in the Microsoft Store to disable the S Mode lock.
Warning: This is a one-way trip. Once you disable S Mode, you can never turn it back on without completely reinstalling the operating system from a USB drive.
- Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on System.
- Scroll down the main window and click on Activation.
- Look for a section titled Switch to Windows 11 Home (or Pro, depending on your license).
- Click the blue text link labeled Go to the Store. (Do not click the link that says “Upgrade your edition of Windows,” as that will try to charge you money).
- The Microsoft Store app will open, displaying a special, hidden page titled Switch out of S mode.
- Click the blue Get button at the top of the page.
- A small loading wheel will appear. After roughly five seconds, the Store will say “You’re all set! You have switched out of S mode.”
You do not even need to restart your computer. The artificial security lockdown is instantly dissolved. You can now open your web browser, download any standard .exe file (like Google Chrome or Steam), and install it flawlessly without Windows blocking you.
