When you connect your Windows 11 laptop to a new Wi-Fi network at a hotel, an airport, or a coffee shop, the operating system instantly assigns it a “Public Network” firewall profile. This is an aggressive security stance that makes your PC completely invisible to other devices on the network, preventing random strangers from accessing your files.
However, if you are in a hotel room with a trusted coworker and you need to rapidly share a massive 50 GB video project over the hotel Wi-Fi using Windows File Sharing, the Public firewall profile will completely block the transfer. To quickly share the file without permanently disabling the Windows Defender Firewall, you must temporarily bypass the Public restriction by switching the network profile.
How to Safely Bypass the Windows 11 Public Network Block
You must change the active Wi-Fi connection from a “Public” profile to a “Private” profile.
- Click the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner of your taskbar).
- Click the small arrow icon next to the Wi-Fi symbol to open the list of available networks.
- Find the hotel or coffee shop network you are currently connected to. Click the small ‘i’ (Information) icon next to it.
- This will instantly open the Windows 11 Settings app directly to the configuration page for that specific Wi-Fi network.
- Look for the section labeled Network profile type.
- By default, the “Public network” radio button will be selected. Click the radio button for Private network.
The firewall bypass is immediate. Windows 11 will instantly drop its aggressive network stealth mode. Your coworker will now be able to see your laptop in their Network folder and access your shared files at full Wi-Fi speeds. Crucial Step: The moment your file transfer is complete, you must return to this menu and switch the profile back to Public network to secure your laptop against other hotel guests.
