In Windows 11, the search bar located in the top-right corner of File Explorer is designed to help you quickly find documents. However, just like a web browser, File Explorer permanently records every single search query you type. If you search for “tax returns 2023” or “confidential client list,” Windows saves those exact phrases.
The next time you (or a coworker looking over your shoulder) click into that search box, a drop-down menu will instantly appear displaying a history of your most private search queries. To protect your privacy, you cannot simply highlight the text and press delete. You must use a specific menu option to purge the Explorer search index.
How to Completely Erase Windows 11 File Explorer Search History
You must use the hidden Search Options menu within the File Explorer ribbon.
- Open File Explorer (press Windows Key + E, or click the folder icon on your taskbar).
- Click anywhere inside the “Search” box located in the top-right corner of the window. (You must click inside the box to force the hidden Search menu to appear).
- Look at the very top of the window (the ribbon menu). You will see a new tab labeled Search options (usually denoted by three horizontal dots or a drop-down arrow, depending on your exact version of Windows 11).
- Click on Search options to reveal a drop-down menu.
- Look for the option labeled Recent searches and hover your mouse over it.
- A sub-menu will appear displaying a list of your most recently typed queries. At the very bottom of this sub-menu, click on Clear search history.
The drop-down menu will instantly vanish. Click inside the search box again. You will see that the entire list of suggested queries has been completely erased. Your previous searches are permanently deleted, ensuring your private file queries remain confidential.
