The Obsolete Assistant
Windows 11 originally shipped with Cortana deeply integrated into the operating system, complete with a dedicated keyboard shortcut: Windows Key + C. Even though Microsoft has actively deprecated Cortana in favor of Windows Copilot, pressing this shortcut on older builds (or systems that haven’t been fully updated) still occasionally triggers the defunct Cortana popup, or on newer systems, awkwardly forces the new Copilot panel to open. If you do not use either digital assistant, accidentally hitting `Win + C` while aiming for `Ctrl + C` to copy text is a constant, frustrating interruption that breaks your typing flow.
Disabling the Shortcut
To reclaim this keyboard combination and completely disable the Cortana (or Copilot) keyboard shortcut in Windows 11, you must use a utility like Microsoft PowerToys, as there is no native toggle for hardcoded Windows keys.
Download and install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store (it is an official, free suite of system utilities). Once installed, open PowerToys and click on Keyboard Manager in the left-hand navigation pane. Ensure the main toggle for “Enable Keyboard Manager” is turned On. Click the Remap a shortcut button. A new window will appear. Click the plus (+) icon to add a new rule. In the “Physical Shortcut” section on the left, click Type and press Windows Key + C. In the “Mapped To” section on the right, click the dropdown menu and select Disable (it is usually at the very top of the list). Click OK at the top right to save the rule. The `Win + C` combination is now completely inert; pressing it will do absolutely nothing.
