In Windows 11, pressing the Windows Key + I shortcut instantly opens the main system Settings application. This is a highly convenient shortcut for power users who frequently need to adjust display scaling, network properties, or Bluetooth connections.
However, this shortcut is located immediately adjacent to Windows Key + U (Accessibility Settings) and Windows Key + O (Orientation Lock). If you type quickly and rely on keyboard shortcuts, accidentally clipping the “I” key will spawn a massive, opaque Settings window directly over your current application, ripping your focus away from your work. If you prefer to simply click the gear icon in the Start menu to access your configurations, you can disable this shortcut entirely.
How to Disable the Windows Key + I Shortcut
You must use Microsoft’s official PowerToys utility to safely intercept and unbind the shortcut without modifying the registry.
- Download and install Microsoft PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or GitHub.
- Launch the PowerToys application from your Start menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Keyboard Manager.
- Ensure the “Enable Keyboard Manager” toggle switch is turned On.
- Click the Remap a shortcut button in the main window.
- A new configuration window will appear. Click the plus (+) icon to create a new rule.
- Under the “Shortcut” column on the left, click the Type button and press Windows Key + I.
- Under the “Mapped To” column on the right, click the drop-down menu and select Disable from the very top of the list.
- Click OK at the top right of the window.
The shortcut is now completely nullified. As long as the PowerToys utility is running in the background, pressing Windows Key + I will do absolutely nothing, ensuring you are never violently interrupted by the Settings app again.
