Windows 11 includes a powerful “Clipboard History” feature that remembers multiple items you have copied, accessible by pressing Windows Key + V instead of the standard Ctrl + V. While incredibly useful for power users moving large amounts of text, it can also be a massive privacy risk.
If you regularly copy sensitive information like passwords, API keys, or personal addresses, this data is secretly stored in the background. If you accidentally press Windows Key + V while sharing your screen on a Zoom call or presenting in a meeting, your entire history of copied text will be instantly broadcast to everyone watching. To ensure your clipboard remains strictly temporary, you can disable this feature and its shortcut.
How to Disable the Windows Key + V Shortcut
You can turn off the Clipboard History feature directly from the Windows 11 Settings app.
- Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings.
- Ensure you are on the System tab in the left-hand navigation menu.
- Scroll down the right side of the screen and click on Clipboard.
- Locate the toggle switch labelled Clipboard history.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it completely Off.
- Next, click the Clear button next to “Clear clipboard data” to permanently delete anything currently saved in the history buffer.
The history buffer is now disabled. Pressing Windows Key + V will no longer bring up a list of your previously copied items. Instead, it will simply prompt you to turn the feature back on, keeping your sensitive data secure from accidental exposure.
