macOS includes a Trackpad gesture specifically designed to help you quickly access files on your desktop. If you place your thumb and three fingers clustered together on the trackpad and then rapidly spread them apart, all your open application windows will violently fly off the edges of the screen, revealing your bare desktop.
For many users, this “spread” gesture is incredibly unintuitive and almost impossible to trigger intentionally. Worse, it is very easy to trigger accidentally when you are simply resting your hand on the laptop or attempting a completely different gesture (like zooming in on a photo). This causes your workspace to unexpectedly vanish, breaking your concentration. You can completely disable this specific gesture to stabilize your desktop.
How to Disable the Show Desktop Trackpad Gesture
You can remove the “spread” shortcut directly from the macOS Trackpad settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Scroll down the left-hand navigation sidebar and click on Trackpad.
- In the main window on the right, click the More Gestures tab at the top.
- Look down the list of gestures for the item labelled Show Desktop.
- Click the drop-down menu next to it (which is currently set to “Spread with thumb and three fingers”).
- Select Off from the drop-down menu.
The change is instantaneous. You can now spread your fingers on the trackpad as much as you like; macOS will simply ignore the input. Your application windows will remain firmly in place, and you will never accidentally banish them off-screen again.
