The Intrusive Dropdown
Windows 11 includes a multitasking feature called Snap Layouts. While you can trigger this menu by hovering over the maximize button or pressing Windows Key + Z, Microsoft also forces a massive, intrusive menu to physically drop down from the top-center of your monitor anytime you click and drag a window near the top edge of the screen. If you are simply trying to casually move a web browser out of the way, having a giant, semi-transparent grey bar suddenly slide down and attempt to suck your window into a grid is incredibly annoying. If you prefer to manually drag your windows without interference, you must disable this specific trigger.
How to Turn Off the Drag-to-Snap Menu
You can disable the top-screen drop-down menu without breaking the core snapping functionality (like dragging a window to the left edge to split the screen).
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
- In the main window, click on Multitasking.
- Look for the master toggle switch labeled Snap windows. (Leave this ON, or you break the feature entirely).
- Click the small downward-facing arrow next to the switch to expand the advanced options.
- Look for the specific checkbox labeled “Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen.”
- Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.
A Normal Desktop
The change is instantaneous. You can immediately grab a window by its title bar and drag it wildly across the top of your screen. The massive grey drop-down menu will no longer appear, allowing you to manually position your applications without the operating system aggressively trying to organize them for you.
