How to Disable Fall Detection on Apple Watch

The False Alarm Problem

The Apple Watch features an incredibly sophisticated algorithm called “Fall Detection.” By analyzing the sudden acceleration and abrupt stop associated with a physical collapse, the watch can detect if you have fallen down. If you do not move for one minute after the impact, the watch will automatically call emergency services and text your GPS location to your emergency contacts. This feature saves lives. However, if you play high-impact sports like rugby, mountain biking, or even aggressive basketball, diving for a ball can easily trick the algorithm. Having your watch attempt to call an ambulance every time you tackle someone on the field is unacceptable. If you are highly active, you must manage this setting.

How to Turn Off Fall Detection

You can disable the emergency algorithm directly from your wrist, or from the companion app on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on SOS.
  3. Tap on Fall Detection.
  4. You will see a master toggle switch. Tap the switch to turn it Off.
  5. A warning prompt will appear asking you to confirm that you want to disable this safety feature. Confirm your choice.

The Compromise Option

If you don’t want to completely lose the safety benefits, you can select a compromise setting. Instead of turning it completely off, you can select the option labeled “Only on during workouts.” This is perfect for cyclists. The watch will ignore falls during your normal daily routine, but the moment you explicitly start an “Outdoor Cycle” workout in the Activity app, Fall Detection instantly activates, ensuring you are protected if you get hit by a car while riding.
