If you have a massive “Downloads” folder filled with hundreds of messy files, finding a specific PDF document hidden amongst dozens of images, videos, and installation files can be incredibly frustrating. Instead of scrolling through the entire list alphabetically, you can instruct Windows 11 to instantly group all identical file formats together, neatly separating your spreadsheets from your photos.
How to Sort by File Type
The fastest way to organize a cluttered folder is by using the sorting options built directly into the File Explorer toolbar.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to your messy folder (e.g., Downloads or Documents).
- In the top command bar, click on the Sort button (the icon featuring an arrow pointing down next to three horizontal lines).
- A dropdown menu will appear. Click on Type.
Instantly, all the files in your folder will reorganize themselves. All the JPEG images will sit together, all the PDF files will be grouped, and all the MP4 videos will be perfectly aligned. If you want to reverse the order (for example, showing folders at the bottom instead of the top), simply click the Sort button again and select Descending.
Grouping Files Visually
If simply sorting them in a list is not enough, you can force Windows to draw physical dividing lines between the different file types.
- In the same top command bar, click on the Sort button again.
- Hover your mouse over the Group by option at the very bottom of the menu.
- From the new flyout menu, select Type.
Your folder will now be beautifully organized with thick, collapsible headers separating each category (e.g., “Adobe Acrobat Document,” “JPG File,” “Application”). You can click on the small arrow next to any header to collapse that specific group of files, making it incredibly easy to manage massive directories.
