How to Restore Previous Versions of a File in Google Docs

Working on a long document often means making continuous edits, deletions, and structural changes. But what happens if you realise you’ve accidentally deleted a crucial paragraph yesterday, or you want to completely revert to how the document looked last week? Fortunately, Google Docs has a powerful built-in feature called Version History that automatically saves every change you make.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to view, restore, and even name previous versions of your files in Google Docs, ensuring you never permanently lose your hard work.

How to Restore a Previous Version in Google Docs

Google Docs continuously saves your work to the cloud. You do not need to manually save your document for Version History to work. Here is how to access and restore older versions:

  1. Open your document in Google Docs on your computer.
  2. In the top menu bar, click on File.
  3. Hover over Version history and click See version history. (Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + Shift + H on Windows or Cmd + Option + Shift + H on a Mac).
  4. A panel will appear on the right side of the screen displaying a list of all saved versions, sorted by date and time.
  5. Click on any timestamp in the right panel. The main document window will update to show you exactly what the file looked like at that specific moment. Changes made by different collaborators are highlighted in different colours.
  6. Once you have found the version you want to bring back, click the blue Restore this version button located at the top of the screen.
  7. A confirmation box will appear. Click Restore to confirm.

How to Save a Copy of a Previous Version

Sometimes you don’t want to completely overwrite your current document; you might just want to extract a paragraph or save an old draft as a completely separate file. You can easily duplicate an older version without affecting your current working document.

  1. Open the Version history panel (File > Version history > See version history).
  2. Find the version you want to keep.
  3. Click the three vertical dots (More actions) next to that specific version.
  4. Select Make a copy.
  5. Enter a name for the new file and choose where to save it in your Google Drive, then click Make a copy.

This will generate a brand new Google Doc containing the historical text, leaving your original document entirely untouched.

Naming Specific Versions for Better Organisation

If you are working on a major project (like a thesis or a legal contract), relying solely on timestamps can get confusing. Google Docs allows you to assign custom names to specific versions, acting as major milestones.

  1. Go to File > Version history.
  2. Click Name current version.
  3. Type a descriptive name (e.g., “Final Draft Before Review” or “V1 Submitted to Client”) and hit Enter.

When you open the full Version history panel later, you can toggle the switch at the top that says Only show named versions. This filters out all the minor auto-saves and only displays your major milestones, making it significantly easier to navigate long editing histories.

Can You Restore Versions on the Mobile App?

Unfortunately, the full Version History functionality is not currently available in the Google Docs mobile app for iOS or Android. While you can view basic details, you cannot browse or restore historical snapshots directly from your phone. To restore a previous version, you must access Google Docs through a desktop web browser.
