Why Rebuild the Windows Search Index?
The Windows Search Index is a background database that continuously tracks the files, folders, and applications on your PC. This index is what allows the Start Menu and File Explorer to return search results almost instantly. Over time, however, this database can become bloated, fragmented, or corrupted.
You should consider rebuilding the Windows search index if you are experiencing any of the following issues:
- Searching from the Start Menu returns completely blank results.
- The search function takes an unusually long time to find basic applications.
- Newly downloaded files or installed apps are not appearing in your searches.
- The Windows Search Indexer process is constantly consuming high CPU or Disk usage in the Task Manager.
Rebuilding the index forces Windows to delete the existing corrupted database and slowly build a fresh, accurate map of your hard drive.
How to Rebuild the Windows Search Index in Windows 11
The process of rebuilding the index is straightforward and built directly into the Windows settings, but it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on how many files are stored on your PC.
- Press the Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
- Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on Searching Windows.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Advanced indexing options. This will open a legacy control panel window.
- In the Indexing Options window, click the Advanced button at the bottom. (You may be prompted for administrator permission).
- Under the “Troubleshooting” section of the new window, click the Rebuild button next to “Delete and rebuild index”.
- A warning prompt will appear advising that rebuilding the index might take a long time to complete and that some views and search results might be incomplete until it finishes. Click OK.
You can now close the advanced options windows. If you open the Start Menu and try to search for something immediately, you may notice that the results are temporarily worse. This is entirely normal. Windows is currently working in the background to catalogue your files from scratch.
How to Speed Up the Indexing Process
To ensure the indexing process finishes as quickly as possible, you should leave your computer powered on and plugged in. Windows is designed to pause background indexing if your laptop is running on battery power to conserve energy, or if you are playing a resource-intensive video game.
Additionally, you can tell Windows to ignore certain folders to make the database smaller and more efficient.
- Return to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Under the “Exclude folders from enhanced search” section, click Add an excluded folder.
- Select large folders that you never need to search for, such as game installation directories or large media archives, and click Select Folder.
By excluding heavy, irrelevant directories, the Windows Search Index will rebuild faster and remain snappy for your day-to-day productivity tasks.
