How to Use Find My on iPhone to Locate Your Apple Devices

Apple’s Find My app is one of the most powerful device-tracking tools available on any smartphone platform. Whether you’ve misplaced your iPhone down the back of a sofa, left your AirPods at a friend’s house, or had a device stolen, Find My gives you the real-time location of every Apple device linked to your Apple ID — all from a single app.

This guide covers everything you need to know: setting it up correctly, locating devices, playing sounds, enabling Lost Mode, and what to do in a worst-case theft scenario.

What Is the Find My App?

The Find My app (available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac) combines two older Apple services — Find My iPhone and Find My Friends — into a single, unified application. It can track:

• iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches
• Mac computers
• Apple Watch
• AirPods and AirPods Pro
• AirTags and compatible third-party accessories

Find My uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, Bluetooth, and Apple’s crowd-sourced network to locate devices even when they are offline.

Before You Start: Enable Find My on Your iPhone

Find My must be switched on before your device goes missing. You cannot enable it remotely after the fact.

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap your name at the top to open Apple ID settings.
3. Tap Find My.
4. Tap Find My iPhone.
5. Toggle Find My iPhone on.
6. Also enable Find My network — this allows your device to be located even when it is powered off, using nearby Apple devices.
7. Enable Send Last Location — this sends your device’s last known position to Apple when the battery is critically low.

How to Locate a Device Using Find My

1. Open the Find My app on another Apple device, or sign in to icloud.com from any browser.
2. Tap the Devices tab.
3. Select the device you want to locate.
4. The app displays its location on a map. A green dot means the location is live. A grey dot shows the last known position.

Play a Sound to Find a Nearby Device

If your iPhone is nearby but out of sight, you can make it emit a loud alert — even if it is set to silent:

1. Select the device in Find My.
2. Tap Play Sound.
3. Your iPhone will produce a loud, high-pitched chime until you physically dismiss it.

Enable Lost Mode

Lost Mode is the most important feature to activate if your device has been stolen or seriously misplaced. When enabled:

• Your device is remotely locked with your passcode.
• Apple Pay is immediately suspended.
• A custom message with your contact number appears on the lock screen.
• Location updates continue in real time so you can monitor movements.
• You receive a push notification when the device comes back online.

To enable Lost Mode:

1. Select the missing device in Find My.
2. Scroll down and tap Mark As Lost.
3. Tap Activate and follow the prompts to set a contact number and message.

Erase Your Device Remotely

If recovery is not possible, you can remotely wipe the device as a last resort. This permanently erases all data and disables location tracking, but Activation Lock remains active — the device is useless to a thief without your Apple ID password.

1. Select the device in Find My.
2. Scroll down and tap Erase This Device.
3. Confirm the action.

On iPhone 11 and later, Find My offers Precision Finding for AirTags. Using the Ultra Wideband chip, it provides directional arrows and a live distance readout, guiding you physically to the AirTag’s location like a compass.

How the Offline Find My Network Works

When a lost device is nearby, surrounding Apple devices anonymously relay its position back to Apple. If a device is currently offline, enable this to receive a push notification the moment it reconnects:

1. Select the offline device in Find My.
2. Scroll down and tap Notify When Found.
3. Toggle it on.
