The Top Margin Clutter
By default, Google Docs displays a horizontal ruler across the top of your document, just below the formatting toolbar. This ruler is essential for complex formatting tasks, such as setting precise tab stops, adjusting paragraph indents, or modifying the left and right page margins visually by dragging the small blue triangles.
However, if you are simply drafting a blog post, writing a journal entry, or taking unstructured notes, you probably don’t need to micromanage your indents to the exact millimeter. In these scenarios, the ruler is just visual clutter that takes up a small amount of vertical screen space. If you prefer a cleaner, more minimalist writing interface, you can easily hide the ruler from view.
How to Hide the Document Ruler
You can toggle the ruler’s visibility directly from the View menu.
- Open your document in Google Docs.
- Click on the View tab in the top menu bar.
- Look down the dropdown list for the option labelled Show ruler.
- If there is a checkmark next to “Show ruler,” the measurement bar is currently visible.
- Click on “Show ruler” to uncheck it.
The ruler will instantly disappear, moving your document slightly higher on the screen and creating a cleaner aesthetic. If you ever need to adjust a complex indent in the future, you can simply return to the View menu and toggle it back on.
