How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Creating Smart Chips (@-mentions)

The @-Mention Frustration

Google Workspace heavily utilizes “Smart Chips,” a feature that attempts to integrate various Google services directly into your writing. In Google Docs, if you type the “@” symbol followed by a name, a date, or a file title, Docs will immediately display a dropdown menu offering to convert your text into a clickable “Smart Chip.” If you hit Enter, your text transforms into a rounded pill shape that links to a contact card, a calendar event, or a Drive file.

While this is excellent for project management or collaborative meeting notes, it is incredibly annoying if you are simply trying to write an email address (like [email protected]), reference a Twitter handle (like @username), or if you frequently use the @ symbol for technical writing. The constant popups disrupt your typing flow. You can disable this automatic Smart Chip menu.

How to Stop Automatic Smart Chips

You can turn off the @-mention trigger within the Google Docs Preferences menu.

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click on the Tools tab in the top menu bar.
  3. Select Preferences from the dropdown list.
  4. In the Preferences window, make sure you are on the General tab.
  5. Look for the checkbox labelled Show Smart chips menu when you type @ (or “Show link details”).
  6. Uncheck the box.
  7. Click the blue OK button to save your changes.

Now, when you type the “@” symbol, Google Docs will treat it as a standard text character. The distracting dropdown menus will no longer appear, allowing you to type email addresses or social media handles uninterrupted.
