The Payment Clutter
Google Chrome includes a built-in Autofill system designed to make online shopping faster. Whenever you type your credit card details into a checkout form on a website, Chrome detects the numbers and immediately drops a popup from the address bar asking, “Save card?” If you click yes, it stores your card details in your Google Account.
For users who rely on dedicated, secure third-party password managers (like 1Password, Bitwarden, or LastPass) to handle their financial data, Chrome’s built-in prompts are redundant and annoying. Having two different systems constantly fighting to save and auto-fill your credit card creates UI clutter and potential security risks on shared computers. You can turn off Chrome’s payment manager completely.
How to Disable Save Card Prompts
You can turn off the payment autofill directly in Chrome’s settings.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the Three Vertical Dots (Menu) in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Autofill and passwords.
- Click on Payment methods in the main pane.
- At the top of the screen, you will see a toggle switch labelled Save and fill payment methods.
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
Once this switch is flipped, Google Chrome will stop monitoring checkout forms for credit card numbers. The annoying “Save card?” popup will never appear again, leaving your dedicated third-party password manager to handle your secure transactions without interference.
