How to Stop Windows 10 from Automatically Hiding Scroll Bars

Why Do Windows Scroll Bars Disappear?

In modern versions of Windows 10, Microsoft adopted a sleek, minimalist design philosophy similar to smartphone interfaces. By default, when you open an application like Settings, the Start Menu, or the Microsoft Store, the vertical scroll bars on the right side of the screen are hidden. They shrink down to a nearly invisible, razor-thin line. The full-width scroll bar only reappears when you actively hover your mouse pointer directly over that edge of the window.

While this looks very clean, it is a nightmare for accessibility and productivity. If you are using a large monitor, a high-DPI display, or if you simply lack fine motor control with a mouse, trying to accurately aim at an invisible line just to scroll down a page is incredibly frustrating. You can force Windows to always display thick, visible scroll bars.

How to Keep Scroll Bars Visible at All Times

You can turn off the auto-hiding behavior in the Windows Ease of Access settings.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. Click on Ease of Access.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, ensure you are on the Display tab (this is usually selected by default).
  4. In the main right-hand pane, scroll down until you see the section labelled “Simplify and personalize Windows.”
  5. Look for the toggle switch labelled Automatically hide scroll bars in Windows.
  6. Toggle the switch to the Off position.

The moment you turn this setting off, you will immediately see thick, traditional scroll bars pop back into existence on the right side of your Settings window. This change applies system-wide to all UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps and modern interfaces.
