How to Disable the Google Docs ‘Activity Dashboard’ (Stop Tracking Viewers)

The Silent Surveillance

When you use Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) in an enterprise or educational environment, Google Docs includes a feature called the “Activity Dashboard.” This tool allows the owner of a document to see exactly who has viewed the file, when they viewed it, and a historical trend of readership over time. It is a powerful analytics tool for managers tracking team engagement on a memo.

However, from a privacy standpoint, it means your boss or teacher can see exactly when you opened the document and how long it has been since you last looked at it. If you prefer to read company documents privately, without leaving a digital footprint that proves exactly when you accessed the file, you can opt out of this tracking system across all your Google Docs.

How to Stop Activity Dashboard Tracking

You can disable your view history globally in the Google Docs privacy settings.

  1. Open your web browser and go to the main Google Docs homepage (docs.google.com).
  2. Click the Main Menu (the three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Click on Settings.
  4. In the Settings popup window, look at the options listed under the “Activity Dashboard” section.
  5. Find the toggle switch labelled “Show your view history.”
  6. Toggle the switch to the Off position.
  7. Click OK to save your changes.

From this moment on, your account is cloaked. When you open a shared document, your name and viewing timestamp will no longer appear in the owner’s Activity Dashboard. Your readership will remain entirely private.
