How to Disable the ‘Offline Access’ Feature in Google Drive for Shared Computers

What is Google Drive Offline Access?

Google Drive offers a powerful “Offline Access” feature that automatically downloads your most recently opened Docs, Sheets, and Slides to your computer’s local hard drive. This allows you to view and edit files even when you don’t have an internet connection.

However, if you are using a shared family computer, a library computer, or a borrowed laptop, this feature is a massive security vulnerability. Anyone who uses that computer after you can potentially open the local cache and read your private documents without needing your Google password. For shared devices, you must disable this feature.

How to Disable Offline Access in Google Drive

You can turn off local caching from the main Google Drive settings page.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com.
  2. Ensure you are logged into the correct Google account.
  3. Click the Settings gear icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.
  4. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  5. In the Settings pop-up, stay on the General tab on the left sidebar.
  6. Scroll down to find the section labelled Offline.
  7. Look for the checkbox that says Create, open, and edit your recent Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files on this device while offline.
  8. Uncheck this box.
  9. Click Done (or the back arrow) in the top-left to save and exit.

When you uncheck this box, Google Drive will immediately purge any locally cached documents from that specific browser. You will only be able to access your files when you have an active internet connection, ensuring your data remains secure on Google’s servers rather than on the local hard drive.
